The Samurai Maedate is a crest that is attached to the front of the kabuto (samurai helmet) which could represent a specific clan, unit, rank, personality trait or to invoke a divine spirit’s power to flow through the samurai.  The samurai maedate where crafted from different materials (brass, wood and paper where most common), in different shapes, sizes and designs.  The most notable designs where often of Deities and animals or dragons.  The maedate can also be hung on display on the wall of over entry ways.

The maedate was added to the evolving tanko style armor as early as the 9th century, Heian period and was called Maedatemono. Over the centuries the maedate would become more ornate in design.  By the 18th Century Edo period the maedate were more flambointly decorative and would not be practical to be worn into battle.
