The kabuto is a helmet which was worn by samurai and their retainers, while dressed in armor. There were many types and styles of kabuto crafted during the Feudal Period of Japan; which were perfected during the Sengoku Era.
This particular kabuto was traditionally crafted by the Iron Mountain Armory in a style known as a Zunari (head shaped) and was most commonly used between the 15th and 17th century. It is fitted with a shikoro (nape guard) to provide protection to the back and side of the neck, from blade and arrow strikes. It features a stretched cloth lining (ukebari) for comfortable fit of most adult head sizes.
The menpo (men-pô = facial armor) is a traditional “ressei-men” style; which features a mustache (or kuchi hige), facial wrinkles (shiwa), posts (odayori ore kugi), detachable nose guard (hana), ear covers (mimi) and throat guard (tare).
Each zunari kabuto is traditionally crafted, full sized, fully functional. Comes standard with a matching menpo, brass circle crest (maedate) and basic portable stand. The kabuto with menpo weighs ~ 5 lbs. Accent colors are the bottom plate or lace of shikoro and tare.
