Dō (breastplate or cuirass) is one of the major components of Japanese armour worn by the samurai class and ashigaru (foot soldiers) of feudal Japan. Our standard samurai Dō is crafted in a traditional Yokohagi Okegawa ni-mai dô, which was very popular in the Sengoku (Warring States) period and is made up of 12 individual iron lames (front + back), rivited together and then spot welded for added security. Okegawa means "tub-sided" and refers to the tub-like shape of the cuirass construction. However, because the armor was designed with a single hinge under the left arm, allowing the wearer to slide into the dô and tie it closed from the other side, it was better known as a "clamshell" dô. The most common style of Okegawa dô in this time period was the Yokohagi (horizontal) in which the plates are riveted in horizontal rows.
All of Iron Mountain Armor features a traditional pin hinge under the left arm pit, which can be removed. Once the pin is removed, the attached cord can be adjusted to accommodate those with a larger chest. The chest and back plate can also be bent and stretched out by 2 ~ 4 cm to help accommodate wearers with a larger chest size. This is great if someone else wants to wear the armor or if you grow a little over the holidays. The watagami (shoulders) on the Irong Mountain armor are adjustable as well and can be moulded to match the shoulders of its wearer, providing them with a better fit and more comfort.
The Classic series Dō features the Okegawa armor style with the rivets filed down.
The Bugyo series Dō features the Okegawa armor style with raised "low dome" rivets.
The Kachi class Dō does not have a wakibiki or brass fittings.
The Gashira class Dō has a wakibiki and brass fittings.
