This samurai gusoku was named in the honor of Murakami Yoshikiyo (村上義清 1501 ~ 1573) who rose through the ranks of the Murakami clan becoming a Daimyo. Once allied with the Takeda clan, their alliance deteriorated when they both expanded into the same province of Shinano. Eventually both the Murakami clan and the Takeda clan clashed in a series of battles which Murakami Yoshikiyo would usually win by strategy or ose due to overwhelming forces.
Eventually Yoshikiyo lost to the Takeda clan and after fleeing, became a retainer under Uesugi Kenshin; inwhich he servered honorebly. At the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima he fought in the Uesugi vanguard and was given Nechi Castle [根知城] in Echigo Province, which he ruled until his death in 1573. Throughout his life, Yoshikiyo was credited with the deaths of many Takeda clan generals, including Takeda Nobushige (younger brother of Takeda Shingen). Yoshikiyo’s son Kunikiyo served the Uesugi clan as a retainer and in 1582 was able to recover the Murakami's Shinano lands.
