The Jingasa (Battle Hat) started to become popular amongst Ashigaru at the end of the Sengoku Jidai to early Edo era. Traditionally a defensive helmet for they were first crafted from wood, leather, nerigawa, then iron and later steel. Progressively getting better as the Ashigaru grew in popularity on the battlefield. Almost always conical in shape, the Jingasa would deflect the blows of weapons out and away from the ashigaru wearing it.
The Ashigaru Jingasa were traditionally lacquered in black and would bear the mark of their clans Mon or the mark of their unit (often painted in gold). Most clans would mark the Jingasa with the mark of their units so that they could be easily identified from a distance.
The inside of the Jingasa was typically lined with hemp cloth, a small pad and four metal rings riveted inside. A cord would tie to the rings and loop down just below the ears. Another cord would then be passed through the loops and tie below chin securing the jingasa to the head.
Our Jingasa are full sized, wearable, fully functional and traditionally crafted from 18 gauge steel. Please choose from the different color options and optional Mon if desired.
